Martha Shade | Fracking Weld County

Martha Shade's newest body of work, Fracking Weld County, is a contemplation on industrial greed, climate change and environmental justice, seen through the personal lens of Weld County, CO. Referencing the design aesthetic of contemporary Afghan war rugs, with their vivid pictorial scenes and border decorations with images of the machines of war, Shade’s meticulous stitchworks depict actual sites in Weld County, CO, the location of the vast majority of Colorado’s fracking industry. Portraying oil drilling paraphernalia within landscapes that include schools, playgrounds, and neighborhoods, the artist brings to light the ways that the raw greed of the gas and oil industry - with the full complicity of the local government - has overlooked the health and safety of a community and of the earth itself.
