ArtXchange Gallery presents Reconstructed Memories, the debut solo exhibition of Alla Goniodsky, a Russian-born stage designer, painter and sculptor. Her new exhibition comprises painting and sculpture to create a dramatic world that seems to arise from the misty corners of memory. Exploring the tendency of our minds to create layers of thoughts and memories, from highly focused details to a complete blur of emotion and sensation, Goniodsky’s paintings are densely worked in layers of oil paint, encaustic, walnut ink and more, creating the look of enlarged historical photographs. Characters, figures and eras overlap and inhabit shadowy fictional environments. Whimsical, romantic, and sometimes darkly humorous, Goniodsky’s paintings often explore a series of Victorian-esque characters, through their celebrations, family relationships and dreams.
