Tu Duy
1948-2008, born in Quang Nam, Vietnam During the 1960s, at the height of the American/Vietnam War, Tu Duy’s opposition to the war led him to join a rural monastery and live there for several years. He spent many hours lying in rice fields observing the beauty of clouds and the empty space beyond. It was here that he formulated his ideas about abstraction and cohesiveness of composition and space. His simple but evocative lines form a lyrical exploration of memory, daily life and his sense of connection with the land around him. Tu Duy’s works have a dreamy, surreal quality and deep sensitivity that strike a responsive chord in the heart of the viewer. Tu Duy’s works have been widely exhibited in Vietnam, France, and the United States. He ran a popular art studio and gallery in Hue, Vietnam for many years. An intense man with a generous heart, his influence in the art community will continue to be felt through his paintings. “We live in a closely connected universe. Humanity and nature are one. I express this unity through blending my subject’s features with the natural world.”
