“When I was growing up in Lima, Peru, my grandmother told me that, in October, all roads lead to the Lord of Miracles.” “What are miracles?” questions Hernandez. “My subject matter is not religious in nature. The miracles of my life are earth-shaking in a more personal way.” In Milagros, imagery from his childhood nostalgia in Lima is combined with references to the life of an artist, love and courtship, and parenthood. Hernandez’s signature surreal, illustrative style combines multiple allusions within individual paintings, creating layered narratives that often hint at both humor and melancholy.
