“The appearance and content of my work comes from several sources: the joy of painting and creating, and my own social, psychological and ethical response to the world as I live and view it.”

Opening October 4, 2012, ArtXchange Gallery presents Conversations, a new series of paintings by Donald Cole. These bold and remarkable works emerge from the layered experiences of 40+ years as a painter, teacher and world traveler. Weathered surfaces hint at ancient relics and mysterious totem forms, expressing Cole’s lifetime exploration of trans-cultural archetypes.

The exhibit shares an intensely personal look into the emotional life of a dedicated painter. The artist describes his driving force, “…the appearance and the content of my work comes from several sources: the joy of painting and creating, and my own social, psychological and ethical response to the world as I live and view it.” The result is a dramatic body of work that encompasses both the dark and light sides of the human experience.

One series of work in intense reds, blacks, and grays explores Cole’s concerns about the dark side of our current reality – violence, human frailty, and anger. These works are juxtaposed with a series of bright, lush works featuring contemplative silhouettes and totems in worn, abstracted landscapes that reveal Cole’s hopes and aspirations for the future.

Paintings presented in pairings and groupings show conversations between the works, as well as hinting at the conversations happening within the mind of the artist during the process of creation. Ultimately, the exhibit is an offering and invitation to the viewer to engage with the world in a deeper, more intuitive way. Conversations runs through November 17, 2012.
