"This book of death was made for a person who may have very little of his life remaining. Daily I see him living with pain, experiencing physical limitations, and fighting constantly with the multiple complications of his illness. Being the person closest to him, I have started to experience his pain and struggle as if they were my own. I have put all my emotion and hope in this book.

In Buddhism, after a human dies, it is believed that it takes 49 days for them to reincarnate; therefore, I have created 49 cards to make up this book. I have constructed the cards from used tea bags and bee’s wax, and I have included my Jumon (Incantation). The unreadable text is written, using Japanese sutra calligraphy, in and under the cards... The materials used in the book were collected while my dear, close friend and I were doing our everyday rituals, such as drinking tea, and picking up bamboo sticks and leaves from street. This book is a collective documentation of our rituals, as well as my personal expression of compassion for his suffering."
